For some, pingpong is more than just a bar sport—it’s a way of life. Ok, maybe that’s taking it a little too far, but for Casey Miller, founder of the Detroit Paddle Battle and owner of 3 Star Ping Pong Parlor, table tennis is serious business.
So… what exactly is the Detroit Paddle Battle? It’s one epic pingpong tournament! The event takes place at Tangent Gallery/Hastings Street Ballroom, 715 E. Milwaukee St., Detroit, on Sunday, March 22. Tables open at 7 p.m. for warmup, and battles begin promptly at 8 p.m.
While the Detroit Paddle Battle originated eight years ago at PJ’s Lager House, 1254 Michigan Ave., Detroit, the concept was based on the idea that pingpong goes hand in hand with rock and roll music and beer. The battle turned into a yearly event, but alas Miller did not host a Paddle Battle last year, as he was busy getting his other project up and running.
“3 Star Ping Pong Parlor is the world’s only portable, rentable pingpong room. The idea is to make it available to rent for parties and private events, but also to set up shop at street festivals, public gatherings, as well as going guerrilla and setting up in unique, fun spots within Detroit,” Miller said.
There will be three different divisions for varying skill levels, including one night stand (beginner), random contender (intermediate) and heavy hitters (advanced). Admission costs $10 and battle entry is free with your admission. This year’s battle will serve as a fundraiser for 3 Star Ping Pong Parlor, so your money will be going to a good place!
“The event will be hosted by Detroit’s favorite master of ceremonies, Mark Pants, as well as current world champion of burlesque, Roxie Dlite… Detroit’s cabaret rock tricksters Pink Lightning will be playing a set, and there will be a special appearance by Squared Circle Revue favorite, Hobo the Clown,” Miller said.
Did I mention the prizes? Three cash prizes will be awarded, one to the winner in each category. Preregistration is not necessary, and interested participants can arrive between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. to sign up.
Pingpong is an incredibly engaging game, and one that makes for a great social sport, according to Miller.
“You don’t have to be any good and you can still enjoy playing,” he said. “On top of the tourney, the show will (be) presented as a full event. There will be a lot going on throughout the night to add to the competition itself.”
